Since last year, when Sun.Star Davao partnered with ABS-CBN Davao to share its expertise in training news writers, the competition took on a more challenging & competitive twist, giving the contestants a feel of what it takes to be reporters.
At the ABS-CBN studio at Shrine Hills in Matina, the semifinalists with their advisers underwent a short but rigid workshop on news writing for television by Sun.Star Davao editor-in-chief Stella A. Estremera.
From the 12 schools that participated in the work of last year’s competition, this year gathered 15 schools, namely: Davao Doctors College, University of the Philippines in Mindanao, Brokenshire College of Davao, Mindanao Medical Foundation College, University of Southeastern Philippines, DMMA College of Southern Philippines, Spamast-Matti in Digos City, University of Immaculate Conception, Holy Cross of Calinan, University of Mindanao, Holy Cross of Davao College, MATS College of Know-how, Cor Jesu College of Digos City, Ateneo de Davao University, & San Pedro College.
To compete in the semifinals are the students who made it through the school competitions. They are: Izzy Cayaon, Fhrain Jane Tampus, & Rizalee Marie Oralde of DDC, who are mentored by their adviser Lily Babayen-on; Althea Gopo, Remile Estacio, & Feliz Aberca of UPMin with Sherryl Petras as their adviser/mentor; Hannah Ebad, Guada Jean Bating, & Lorleife Lumontod of Brokenshire with their mentor Melody Ponteras; Karryl Leigh Mebrado, November Neriza Ang, & Beryl Anne Daquipa of MMFC with Elvira Lesmoras; Neil Palare, Nerissa Arcena, & Michael Angelo Baino of USEP with Liza Asombrado; Mark Reynald Montero, Jun Mark Mercado, & Eumarie Gail Baydal of DMMA; Roel Apas, Rhea Montecalvo, & Cherry Dee Ahig of Spamast with Cindy Rosil; Michie Vallente, Bernadette Maribojo, & Harold Montano of UIC with Monique Musni; John Paul Cabug-os, Jean Libardos, & Erika Encinales of HC-Calinan with Jessica Rabang; Joyville Pastor, Jefferson Lambino, & Jeatrin Oro of UM with Dinah Hernandez; Donjae Bontia, Peter Concubierta, & Kirsten Kane Roa of HCDC with Katrina Angela Posadas; Sheena Testa, Julius Gomez, & Quardzyx Persigas of MATS with Mark Suico; Alamira Aratan, Charisse Mae Surpusa, & Marvin Abatayo of Cor Jesu with Raymark Orbita; Zillah Gallardo, Jemimah D?Lonsod, & Ditzchie Grace Pia of ADDU with Joseph Laroscain; & Cornelio Gabriento III, Alyssa Marie Graza, & Marie Angelique Go of SPC with Amseva Bentayao.
Aside from competing for newscasting, the participants will also get the chance to write, produce & air their reports over ABS-CBN TV Patrol Southern Mindanao.
The newscasting competition had already produced full-fledged ABS-CBN reporters, Diana Juaban, who was then a Mass Communication student of ADDU, & Claire Cornelio, formerly of HCDC. Both were products of the 1st Newscasting Competition held in 2010.
